Published: October 12, 2008

BARTOW - A Bartow police officer investigating a stolen vehicle complaint early Saturday morning shot at a suspect after the man slammed the vehicle in reverse, aiming at the lawman, Bartow police said.

The bullet or shattered glass cut the top of the suspect's head.

He was not seriously injured.

James Edward Moore, 28, was charged with grand theft, fleeing to elude and two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

It was the first time a Bartow police officer fired on a suspect in 17 years, officers said.

Police said they got a call of an auto theft in progress shortly before 1 a.m. in the 2400 block of State Road 60. Officers were looking for a dark pickup with a stolen motorcycle in the bed.

They spotted a truck matching that description and attempted to pull it over, police said, but the driver did not stop.

At one point, the driver put the truck into reverse and tried to hit the patrol car, police said.

As the vehicle was stopped in an orange grove, a passenger fled, and as the unnamed officer approached the vehicle, Moore again put the truck in reverse and hit the accelerator, police said. The officer fired one shot through the rear window of the truck.

Moore was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken into custody. The identity of the passenger has not been released.

The officer who shot into the truck was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Motorcyclist, Deputy Collide

A Polk County deputy transporting a prisoner in his patrol car Friday night was hit by a motorcycle, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Deputy Tim Marcoux, 30, had entered State Road 60 from Willis Road when he was hit by the motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, a release said.

Robert M. Mayfield of Valrico, 34, was in critical condition Saturday at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The deputy and passenger had minor injuries.

Man Arrested In Knife Threat
TAMPA - A 27-year-old Tampa man was jailed early Saturday, accused of jabbing an 8-inch butcher knife through a screen door to attack an acquaintance.

Jorge Alberto Rios-Vega, 14205-C 19th St., told deputies that he only was trying to scare the 42-year-old. He was charged with aggravated assault and was in the Orient Road Jail on Saturday. Bail was set at $2,000.

Offer Of Ride Ends In Robbery

BRADENTON - Three people were robbed and pistol-whipped Friday night after offering two men a ride.

After the suspects were picked up at a Wendy's off 14th Street West, Manatee County sheriff's deputies said, they pulled a gun on the occupants. The pair got out of the car in the 5500 block of West 26th Street in Bradenton, deputies said, where two men in another vehicle were waiting.

No arrests had been made.
