Settling Down Not So Easy

Lightning rookie and No. 1 overall draft pick Steven Stamkos is making the transition this season from junior star to NHL regular. Throughout the season, the 18-year-old from Markham, Ontario, will provide a weekly diary to share his journey with Tribune readers.

What a week this has been. We got back from Prague on Monday. We had a couple days off, but I had a busy week. There was a television commercial I had to shoot for Nike Canada after practice, had a room full of stuff that I had to autograph. And at the same time, I've been trying to find a place to live so I can move out of the hotel I've been in since training camp.

Finding a place to live was definitely a new experience for me. I'm used to having my parents do that stuff. It's like an introduction to the real world, doing what real people have to go through every day to live their lives.

I think I checked out five or six places before I picked the one I wanted, so there were some early mornings trying to go out and see the places. It's tough for me, I'm really new to this stuff so I was asking my parents a lot of questions. It was a learning process, and I know the next time what to look for and ask for. I'm glad it's all done and hopefully we'll get all moved in by next week. It's unfurnished, so I have to deal with that now, too, but my parents are in town so my mom is going to stay around a couple of days to help me settle in, so I'm pretty happy about that.

It's a great spot, a lot of the guys are near there, so I'm pretty excited. I think by Tuesday I should be in there, hopefully get the furniture stuff dealt with. I picked up a new car Friday, so I can cruise around town now. I'm pretty happy about that. My car is a BMW 335i, nothing too expensive or too flashy but good for me.
