CLEARWATER - A Clearwater man with Alzheimer's disease who vanished during the weekend was found Sunday night wandering the St. Petersburg campus of the University of South Florida.
Clifford Harrison, 71, and his 2003 Toyota Camry vanished late Saturday or early Sunday, his wife told Clearwater police.
Harrison was found about 10:15 p.m. Sunday, and his car later was found nearby at First Street and First Avenue South, said Joelle Castelli, a spokeswoman for the city.
Castelli said the state used the new Silver Alert system. Modeled after the state's Amber Alert, the system is used to get the word out when someone with dementia or Alzheimer's disappears if the person is thought to be using a car.
This is thought to be the first time the Silver Alert system has been used, at least in Pinellas County, Castelli said. The man, however, was discovered not because campus police had been alerted to his disappearance via Silver Alert, but because a campus police officer spotted him wandering around one of the buildings on campus, according to USF police services.
