TAMPA - Bail again has been denied for Byron Moorehead, 20, who is accused in the abduction and slaying of civil engineer Charles London Beck in March.
Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Daniel H. Sleet rejected Moorehead's request to be released on bail pending trial on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery and armed kidnapping.
Sleet relied on the testimony of two Hillsborough County sheriff's detectives, who said Moorehead's two co-defendants named him as the person who fired a bullet into the back of Beck's head.
Nick Sinardi, Moorehead's attorney, argued that the only things tying his client to Beck's death were statements by the two women facing charges in the case.
Beck, 25, last was heard from March 12 after returning from a business trip. Detectives said Beck was lured to Moorehead's apartment, at 2601 Cabin Court, by Nicole Sylvester, 20. Detectives said the pair planned to rob Beck and that withdrawals were made from Beck's accounts after his disappearance and death.
Co-defendant statements indicate Beck was shot at the ramp of the Ellenton exit on southbound Interstate 75. Investigators said Michelle Treinika Martin, also charged in the disappearance, led them to Beck's shallow grave in Highlands County.
Moorehead and Sylvester were arrested in Palm Beach County with Beck's 2002 silver Mercedes.
