BRANDON - Last week, Brandon suffered its first loss of the season to nationally ranked Plant.
On Monday night, it was Brandon that delivered the first loss to an undefeated team after beating Newsome in three games, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, in Class 5A-District 8 match.
Sophomore setter Lindsey Watson led the Eagles (18-1) with 10 kills, nine digs and five aces.
"It was senior night and we were pumped up," Watson said. "We saw the story about them in the paper and how they were undefeated and we wanted to be the ones to take that from them."
Newsome (9-1) was led by Sean Thurman's 11 digs while Jen Worth and Lauren Zellmer added five kills apiece.
The Wolves led 10-8 in Game 1 until Brandon went on a 13-5 run to seal a 25-17 victory. In Game 2, the Eagles jumped out to a 8-0 lead and cruised to the 25-16 win. Newsome tried to avoid the sweep in Game 3, taking a 5-0 lead, but Brandon rallied to tie the game and held on to take the match.
"(Newsome) is going to play like they have nothing to lose," Brandon coach Amy Watson said. "We do have something to lose. It's scary to play somebody like that. They come in and they want to beat Brandon. We're sitting on top of the district."
Newsome plays at Armwood Tuesday for a chance to seal the second seed in the district.
"We made a lot of unforced errors," Newsome coach Shelby Jordan said. "In their minds, they were so amped up for this match. It was all in their minds."
