PLANT CITY - About 200 friends and family members said goodbye Thursday to former City Commissioner Robert Brown at a memorial service at his church.
The senior pastor at First Baptist Church of Plant City, the Rev. Ron Churchill, spoke of Brown's active role in the church as a volunteer financial advisor, Sunday school teacher and believer. Brown died Sunday at age 49 after a bout with eye cancer.
"Robert was not a perfect person," Churchill said. "I am not a perfect person and neither are you. He did, however, believe in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and I have no doubt his is in Heaven with the Lord."
Brown, chief financial officer and executive vice president of Sunshine State Federal Savings and Loan Association, served on the city commission from 2005 until June. He did not seek re-election citing personal reasons.
Those who spoke at Thursday's service included Sunshine State Savings and Loan President Floyd Hall, Mayor Rick Lott and former city commissioner and current state Rep. Rich Glorioso.
First Baptist minister of music Pete Battaglia sang "Standing on the Promises;" church member David Sullivan sang "Amazing Grace."
Churchill ended the service by quoting Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
"Robert would want each one of us to follow him to Our Savior," Churchill said.
