Hillsborough Citizen Boards Could Use Your Advice

Quick, put on your good citizen cap. There are only a few days left to get your application in for Hillsborough County's citizen advisory boards and councils.

Some of the boards with openings:

The Affordable Housing Advisory Board considers issues affecting - what else - affordable housing development. Members also assist the county in developing new programs and policies.

The Health Care Advisory Board provides recommendations to the county commission on the Indigent Health Care Plan. It focuses on standards of community care, policies for providing care to poor residents, allocating financial resources, coordinating community resources and evaluating the effectiveness of programs.

The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority strives to provide safe, dependable and cost-effective public transportation.

The Historical Advisory Council makes sure there is a uniform historical marker program across the county, including in Tampa, Plant City and Temple Terrace.

The Historic Resources Review Board acts as an architectural review board to protect historic resources in unincorporated areas.

The Human Relations Board encourages equality by reviewing complaints filed under the county's Human Rights Ordinance, which promotes fair treatment and equal opportunity for all people.

The Land Use Appeals Board hears appeals of the land-use hearing officer's decisions on special-use permits and variances from zoning regulations.

The Public Art Committee selects, places and maintains public art in the county.

The Water Conservation Technical Advisory Committee makes recommendations to the county commission on water conservation issues.

Who: All volunteers must be registered voters in Hillsborough County. Some boards require related experience.

When: The deadline to apply is Thursday. Appointments will be made by the end of the year.
