Guardian ad Litem needs volunteers to represent children who have been removed from their homes by the state.
You don't have to have knowledge of the legal system, but you do need good judgment and must be at least 19 years old. You also need to be able to visit a child every 30 days, file reports, attend court hearings, and maintain written documentation of interviews, telephone conversations and visits, among other duties. The time commitment is generally five to 10 hours per month for a child.
Training begins Oct. 23. Classes are twice a week for five weeks. Some are at Christ the King Catholic Church, 821 S. Dale Mabry Highway. Others will be available online. Interested participants will be interviewed to determine whether the role is a good fit, said Melissa Schultz, spokeswoman for the Hillsborough County program.
