TAMPA - Town 'N Country area residents are advised to avoid Sweetwater Creek and the area where it flows into Tampa Bay for the next few days, after a large sewage spill Sunday.
A broken sewer line dumped about 300,000 gallons of sewage into Sweetwater Creek on Sunday morning.
The break happened along Comanche Avenue, just east of Hanley Avenue. Workers found it about 4:30 a.m. after a treatment plant noticed its flow had decreased.
The creek runs south and flows into the bay in the Courtney Campbell Parkway area.
Workers from the county's sewer department worked with a private contractor to repair the 20-inch line. The work was expected to be finished Sunday.
The break was in a section of new pipeline about 100 yards east of where there was a similar break Sept. 12. The utility department will notify environmental agencies, take samples from the creek and post signs warning people to avoid contact with the water.
