Deputies: Roommates' Money Dispute Leads To Stabbing

TAMPA - Deputies have charged a man with felony attempted murder, saying he stabbed a roommate in a dispute over money.

Alfred Lee Thompson, 45, of Tampa was held without bail at the Orient Road Jail today after his arrest about 10 p.m. Monday.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Thompson and his roommate, Richard Mahaffey, 58, began arguing Monday evening about money. Mahaffey left their home in the 1200 block of East 139th Avenue to calm down, the sheriff's office said.

When he returned, Thompson attacked him with a 6-inch knife, stabbing Mahaffey in the back, arm and back of the head, the sheriff's office said.

Mahaffey's injuries were not life-threatening, the sheriff's office said. He was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital.
