TAMPA - A. Brian Albritton is officially the new U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.
Albritton was sworn in to his new post this morning by U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, said Steve Cole, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office. Albritton's commission was signed by President Bush at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Cole said.
This morning's ceremony was brief and private. Albritton said earlier this week he expects a more public swearing-in ceremony will be held later.
It's possible Albritton will have the job only a short time if the next president asks for the resignations of all U.S. attorneys. However, there could be an extension of his term to accommodate the time it may take for the new administration to find a replacement.
"I'm looking to make the best of this for as long as I can," Albritton said Monday. "I've enjoyed the bipartisan support that got me in this position. …I'm not going to speculate on what's going to happen Jan. 20. I'm just thinking the best."
Albritton fills a vacancy dating from March 2007, when former U.S. Attorney Paul Perez resigned. Interim U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill did not apply for the permanent appointment.
