Mall's Wall To Raise Awareness

Published: October 15, 2008

WESLEY CHAPEL - When The Shops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapel opens Oct. 30, visitors will be able to leave a lasting mark on the new mall while helping to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

On Nov. 1 and 2, those who buy a $50 6-inch-by-6-inch tile will be able to put either their handprint or a message on the tile before it is later glazed and placed on the wall.

Cynthia Corbin, unit executive director for the American Cancer Society in Pasco, said she is thrilled to be partnering with the shops for the Print Pink! campaign. She said is looking for more people to sign up and purchase the tiles.

"I think they are a terrific partner," Corbin said. "It is a great fit since they are opening in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I think the wall will leave a lasting legacy for people to come back and touch and revisit for years to come. Hopefully, we will be able to have events there in the future as well."
County Commissioner Pat Mulieri was among the first to get her handprint on a tile for the wall.

"This wall will be up for many years," Mulieri said. "I think it will be a great gathering place for future events. I love the American Cancer Society because 89 cents of every dollar goes to their mission. They have also funded 42 scientists who have gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize."

Mulieri also had a chance to take a tour of the new 646,000-square-foot mall, which cost about $156 million to build. She said she appreciates that the mall will be bringing 1,800 new jobs to the area.

Zephyrhills Mayor Cliff McDuffie also toured the center and said he thinks people will be driving from Zephyrhills to shop and eat at the "beautiful new mall."

During the grand opening weekend, The Shops also will feature a Macy's Newest Star Makeover event, a health and fitness event, and a Dillard's Designer Runway Show that will benefit the American Cancer Society. The fashion show is at 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at Center Court. For $20, attendees will get front-row seating, a swag bag that includes a $10 Dillard's gift card and entrance to a party.
