PORT RICHEY - Some spooky sightings already have been reported at Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park, where volunteers are preparing for the annual Halloween in the Woods event.
A pirate ship and a giant bat are taking shape as crews from the Salt Springs Alliance park volunteer group build things that will go bump in the night Oct. 24 and 25. Volunteers began building sets in earnest Oct. 4.
"This year it promises to be bigger and better with the addition of several new activities," said Linda Tracey, the group's president.
Returning from previous years will be kid's games, hayrides, pony rides, lots of candy and the Kiddie Trail. Also look for an expanded "Spooky Trail," face-painting and a helicopter flight simulator.
The costume contest, for children 12 and younger, will start at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25. First, second and third place prizes will be given in two age groups: 7 and younger and 8 to 12.
For the adventurous, two night runs through the woods are scheduled for Oct. 24. The one-mile Night Owl Classic will start at 11 p.m., and the 5K Creature Feature will get under way at midnight. Each runner needs a headlamp or flashlight. Register by Friday for $12, $15 after.
Halloween in the Woods will run from 6 to 10 p.m. both nights at the state park on Salt Springs Road, behind Sears in the Gulf View Square mall. General admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 and younger. Games, food and rides cost extra, but there's no fee or registration for the costume contest.
