A Polk County sheriff's clerical assistant was arrested today, accused of falsifying documents to cover up her involvement in an animal neglect case, according to a criminal arrest affidavit.
Heather McGill, 25, of Bartow, was charged with official misconduct and taken to Polk County Jail, sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said in a statement.
McGill, a former animal control officer, and her father were charged in August with misdemeanor animal neglect when deputies found a cat in their possession that was emaciated and in poor health, Eleazer said.
McGill was suspended from her duties at the animal control office and given a clerical position pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Before the investigation was completed, McGill gained access to agency records and tampered with documents related to her animal neglect case, Eleazer said.
McGill resigned from the sheriff's office today. She was hired by the agency on Dec. 18, 2006.
