ST. PETERSBURG - Fans chosen in the Tampa Bay Rays' lottery to buy tickets for a possible Game 6 in the American League Championship Series are on the clock.
The winners, notified by e-mail, may begin buying tickets online at 5 p.m. today and continue until they are sold out.
And with demand increasing, an additional 5,762 tickets have been added to the lottery. The Rays will open that many more seats in the upper reaches of Tropicana Field for the remainder of the postseason. Those seats are usually unavailable and covered by a tarp.
"Rays fans have made it very clear that they want us to make every possible seating opportunity available," Rays President Matt Silverman said in a news release.
Game 6 between the Rays and Boston Red Sox is scheduled for 4:37 p.m. Saturday at Tropicana Field unless Tampa Bay wins Game 5 on Thursday in Boston to clinch the AL pennant. Tampa Bay leads the best-of-seven series, 3-1.
Ticket information for a possible Game 7 at Tropicana Field on Sunday has not been released.
Meanwhile, fans not already registered in the ticket lottery have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday to enter one for World Series tickets, should the Rays advance. To register online, go to www.raysbaseball.com.
Those already registered during previous periods need not do so again.
Demand for the tickets has soared as the Rays have progressed through the playoffs. Tampa Bay defeated the Chicago White Sox in the AL Division Series to advance to the ALCS.
Fans registered in the lottery will find the competition for tickets has increased.
"At the rate we've been selling out, yeah, I would have to say there are more and more people registering," Rays communications manager Carmen Molina said today. "When you only have 40,000 tickets and hundreds of thousands of people possibly registering, you're not going to get in every time."
