Grajales Picks Michigan

Brandon High senior wrestler Eric Grajales has verbally committed to Michigan.

Grajales, a three-time undefeated state champion for the Eagles who is rated the nation's No. 2 overall recruit by InterMat, chose the Wolverines over Penn, Cornell and Columbia. Grajales made official visits to all four programs.

"I knew going into the recruiting process that all four schools, all four were great academically and all four had great wrestling programs. I just felt like Michigan was the place I could thrive in and accomplish all of my goals at the collegiate level," Grajales said late Monday. "I knew I had to go to a place where my heart wanted to be. That's what it came down to. I knew in my heart that's where I wanted to be, and that's where I needed to be to strive and accomplish all I wanted to accomplish."

Grajales said he plans to sign with the Wolverines, who finished seventh in the team standings at last season's NCAA Championships, during the early signing period in November.

"They have a great program," Grajales said. "I feel like the guys there, the guys that I will be training with, will help me become the best I can be."

VOLLEYBALL: Berkeley Prep senior libero/setter Christina Theofilos has decided to play for Notre Dame.

The 5-foot-4 defensive specialist is a two-time Tribune all-county first-team selection and a Class 3A all-state selection. She has helped the Buccaneers, ranked in the Top 25 in both the ESPN Fab 50 and Century Club Top 100, reach the 3A state final four the past three years, and she leads the team with 199 digs and 261 assists. As a junior, she led the county in digs with 593.

"I have been watching Notre Dame volleyball this fall whenever it's on TV, and I am excited because I think I will be able to make an immediate impact on the team and help them with their serve-receive and defense," Theofilos said.
