TAMPA - WTSP, Channel 10, sports anchor Justin Allen has been sidelined in a Boston hospital with a bacterial infection, but he expects to be back in action soon.
Allen says he checked in to the hospital after covering the Tampa Bay Rays' 13-4 rout of the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
"I had an infection in my arm," he said in a telephone interview today. "It's not that serious. There was a minor surgery, but there's nothing life-threatening. This is just a little hiccup."
Allen said the cause of the infection had not been determined, but his arm had been hurting for a few days and had started swelling Tuesday.
"It hurt like hell, but I am fine now," he says.
He says he expects to be released Thursday. The Rays could earn a trip to the World Series with a win over the Red Sox in Game 5 on Thursday night at Fenway Park.
"I want to get back to cover the Rays in the World Series," Allen says. "I don't want to miss that."
Allen has been working long hours, covering the Rays' march through the playoffs as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
WTSP has dispatched sports anchor-reporter Angela Jacobs to cover Thursday's game.
Allen joined WTSP in June 2006 as the main sports anchor-reporter. He anchors the sports during the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts (now known as "10 Connects") and is host of "Sportsline Live" on Sunday nights.
Reporter Walt Belcher can be reached at (813) 259-7654.
