A 46-year-old woman has been charged with driving-under-the-influence manslaughter after the man she struck Wednesday night while leaving a bar died today at a local hospital, Sarasota police say.
Constance S. Saikaley of 3357 Ramblewood Place, Sarasota, also has been charged with five counts of DUI property damage.
This is what happened about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a criminal arrest affidavit:
Saikaley was backing her car out of a parking space at Shakespeare's English Pub, 3550 S. Osprey Ave., Sarasota, and hit a vehicle parked next to hers. Saikaley continued backing up and struck James B. Halpin, 55, who was pushed into another car.
Halpin fell and his head hit the pavement. Saikaley kept backing up and hit four other vehicles. Witnesses say Saikaley told an unconscious Halpin "that he was faking it and to get up."
Bartenders and waitresses said Saikaley and Halpin were seen drinking together at the pub. A receipt from the bar shows that the couple ordered five glasses of wine, one beer and onion rings, police say.
Saikaley told police she was Halpin's fiancée.
Halpin, who suffered serious head injuries, was taken off life-support and died at 3:05 p.m. today at Bayfront Medical Center, Sarasota Police Department Capt. Stan Duncan said.
