NEW PORT RICHEY - Greater New Port Richey Main Street is hosting its inaugural Scarecrow Decorating Contest, which is sponsored by Karen's Gifts. Folks are invited to create a scarecrow that will be displayed in historic downtown New Port Richey along Grand Boulevard.
The contest will coincide with the Pumpkin Fest Shop 'n' Stroll that is being held on the streets of downtown and is open to families, businesses, schools, Scout troops or any organization wishing to participate.
Individuals are asked to register with Greater New Port Richey Main Street, 6231 Grand Blvd. Registrations should be received by Wednesday.
Once registered, the Main Street group will assign a location along Grand Boulevard and participants will be responsible for hanging their scarecrow between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. Oct. 25.
Scarecrows cannot be attached using adhesive materials or metal wires. Only twine and plastic zip ties can be used and they cannot interfere with automobile or foot traffic.
No political messages can be used in the creation of the scarecrow. The person's name or organization must appear on the final item and be proportionate to the size of the scarecrow.
Scarecrows will be on display during the Pumpkin Fest Shop 'n' Stroll, with judging occurring between 2 to 3 p.m. The grand prize will be a $50 gift certificate to Karen's Gifts and first, second and third place ribbons being given at 3 p.m. at Center Stage, Cavaliere Square.
Scarecrows must be removed by 6 p.m., Oct. 25.
