PORT RICHEY - Bill Bunting has decided destruction of Republican campaign signs has gone too far.
Bunting, chairman of the Pasco County Republican Executive Committee, said the local party is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for defacing signs promoting presidential candidate John McCain, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis or any other Republican candidate.
The reward also can be collected for fingering vandals who target Republican homes. Bunting reported that someone spray painted Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's name, along with a vulgarity, on the Port Richey house of a McCain supporter.
Pasco Democrats don't plan to offer any rewards, but they also are having a problem, though not with graffiti on houses.
Alison Morano, chairwoman of the Pasco County Democratic Executive Committee, said her party has experienced a lot of sign theft since the primary season.
In some cases, people put up a sign in the front yard and it's gone the next morning, Morano said. Many of the people are undeterred and return to the Democratic office to get another sign.
"Sometimes it's just a hazard of the election season," Morano said.
