Published: October 17, 2008

SHADY HILLS - Friends and relatives gathered just beyond the crime scene tape Thursday morning to comfort one another and try to come up with a reason for the fatal shooting of Cory Lynn Evans.

Evans, 21, was shot just before 5 a.m. at his cousin's house at 18236 Oxenham Ave. Another cousin, Kenneth Sheridan Evans, 25, was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound, said Pasco County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll. He did not know the cousin's condition.

A third person was shot, but Doll declined to provide his name, saying the man might be a suspect. There could be more suspects, as well, he said.

Detectives released no information on a possible motive.

Just before 11 a.m., a man pulled up behind a patrol car near the crime scene and got out of a car carrying a handgun. He gave the weapon to deputies. A deputy radioed to someone and ran to the crime scene with the gun.

"We're not commenting on that," Doll said.

Lawyer Charged, Put In Program

TAMPA - Local defense lawyer Kevin Napper was placed in a pretrial diversion program for first-time offenders after being accused of propositioning an undercover police officer.

Napper qualified for the misdemeanor program, Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi said Thursday.

Napper is married to Circuit Judge Katherine Essrig.

Tampa police said Napper stopped his car at 2 p.m. Sept. 29 in Drew Park and offered the undercover officer $40 to perform a sex act.

The charges will be dropped if Napper completes the program.

Child Abuse Charge Levied

TAMPA - Lee Edward Cook Jr. beat a 6-year-old relative with a belt when the boy didn't do his homework, police said. Police arrested Cook, 25, on Wednesday, charging the Tampa man with child abuse and child neglect. He left a 2-year-old child unattended, police said.

Cook was released from Orient Road Jail after posting $9,500 bail.

Cleaning Woman Jailed In Thefts

TAMPA - A 46-year-old woman stole more than $30,000 in jewelry from five homes while she was employed by a cleaning service, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said. Deputies arrested Beverly Elizabeth Jordan at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Ruskin. She was charged with six counts of grand theft. The biggest haul, $19,000, was from a home on Browning Avenue in South Tampa, deputies said.

Jordan was being held Thursday in Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $12,000.

Trial Date Set In Slayings

TAMPA - Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Daniel H. Sleet set a Jan. 20 trial date Thursday for a man accused of killing a bystander in a Brandon bar shooting. Authorities say Tyrone Lamont Grimes killed Karen Williams, a 36-year-old mother of three, when three shots were fired inside Fluid, a nightclub at 2016 Town Center Blvd.
