TAMPA - The Rev. Hank Lindstrom, who grew his Christian radio show, "Bibleline," from a 15-minute program to a daily one-hour show that reached listeners in 17 markets for more than 20 years, died Monday of complications from diabetes. He was 68.
On his call-in radio show, the conservative, evangelical pastor gently answered questions and helped listeners understand the Bible.
"He was so faithful," said Chris Gould, general manager of Salem Communications, the company that carried Bibleline on WTBN, 570 AM and WTWD, 910 AM. "He had a heart to communicate the gospel. He was very, very strong on his theology and doctrine. He's led so many people to the gospel."
Lindstrom's ministry was being streamed live over the Internet to some 94 countries when he died, Gould said.
"He was so grateful to have the opportunity to do what he did," Gould said.
Lindstrom was studying electrical engineering at the University of Florida when he began reading the Old and New Testaments.
He decided not to pursue engineering as a career. He instead went to Florida Bible College in Miami.
Lindstrom's wife, Jeanette, said her husband "was a student of the Bible."
"He knew there was a force bigger than man that created us. Science didn't give him the answers he was looking for; he found the answers in Christ."
In 1966, Lindstrom came to Tampa for his first job in ministry, as pastor of Calvary Community Church.
He told the Tribune in 2004, "I have as much fun today as I did when I started. You hear a lot about pastor burnout, but that hasn't happened with me."
Funeral services for Lindstrom will be at 11 a.m. today at Calvary Community Church, 4811 George Road in Town 'N Country.
