TAMPA - Enrollment in the Florida Prepaid College Plan begins Monday, and rates this year are up as much as 6.5 percent.
Families can lock in tuition prices through varying payment options, and the plan is guaranteed by the state, regardless of economic downturns.
The cost of a four-year university tuition plan for a newborn, paid in one lump sum, is $14,359. The same contract last year cost $13,516.
Enrollment runs through Jan. 31. Families can sign up at www.florida529plans.com or by calling 1-800-552-4723.
Prices and plans vary depending on a child's age. Below are a few other options for a newborn.
Four-year university tuition plan:
• Five-year plan (55 monthly payments): $280.36
• Monthly payment plan: $95.80 (payments are made until the child enters college)
Two-year community college tuition plan:
• Lump-sum payment: $4,972.20
• Five-year plan: $97.08
• Monthly payment plan: $33.17
Four-year tuition differential fee plan (for universities, such as the University of South Florida, that charge supplemental tuition fees):
• Lump-sum payment: $4,613.86
• Five-year plan: $92.82
• Monthly payment plan: $31.79
