TAMPA - Monday will mark the first meeting between the weakened board of the Byrd Alzheimer's center and the board -- made up mostly of University of South Florida representatives -- that now runs the institute.
With USF in control, College of Medicine Dean Stephen Klasko will spend Monday morning outlining the goals of the Johnnie B. Byrd Sr. Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute and how he will track its progress.
Klasko became the center's chief executive officer when the boards of Byrd and USF agreed in the summer to form an affiliation. That move created a new board of seven members, four of whom are from USF, that manages the institute.
The original Byrd board will serve an advisory and advocacy role.
To turn around the institute's financial woes – Byrd received no state funding this year and lived off its cash reserves – Klasko laid off 19 of the center's 71 workers in September. Most of them were administrators whose duties also were performed by others at the university.
Now that he has cut costs, Klasko has to find other revenue sources, whether from corporate partnerships, from the clinic he opened at the institute in the summer or from donors.
After the meeting Monday, set to run from 9 to 11 a.m. at the institute, off Fletcher Avenue on USF's campus, the two boards will tour the center and its new clinic.
