TAMPA - The news that the Bucs are starting a Ring of Honor was greeted with enthusiastic approval Thursday at team headquarters.
Tampa Bay personnel executive Doug Williams and 10-time Pro Bowl LB Derrick Brooks were pleased to hear the Bucs plan to unveil a Ring of Honor next year in conjunction with celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the 1979 club that came within one win of a Super Bowl berth.
"It's well-deserved, and I was excited to read about it," Brooks said of the article in Thursday's Tampa Tribune. "I pray I'll be around to see it happen."
As quarterback of the 1979 Bucs, Williams led Tampa Bay to a 10-6 record and a spot in the NFC title game.
"I've gotten calls from a couple of guys already," Williams said. "I think you're a product of where you came from. When you're a part of the Buccaneers, you can't start in '96 - you have to start in 1976."
As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, the Bucs have decided to wear their throwback orange jerseys for at least one game in 2009.
