THE DIFFERENCE: Spoto's Alex Byers scored on a 47-yard pass from Jamaurice Burgess late in the second quarter; then, on the next play from scrimmage, he picked off a pass and scored on a 53-yard return.

GAME NOTES: The win will go into the Spoto (1-5) record book as its first of the year, but the Spartans had three wins erased earlier in the season after Coach Dale Caparaso informed the FHSAA the team was unknowingly using an ineligible player. Spoto has lost twice since. ... Sickles' Chris Nahat jumped over a Spoto defender to haul in a touchdown pass from Cullen O'Brien, but the Gryphons (1-6) lost top running back Scott O'Donoghue to a leg injury. The Gryphons were unable to move the ball after the injury. ... After Byers scored twice to put the Spartans in the lead, Spoto controlled time of possession and field position. The Spartans went up 20-7 on an 8-yard pass from Burgess to Byers and scored on the next possession on a Eugene Walton 10-yard run. Byers had three TDs.

STAT OF THE GAME: Spoto quarterback Burgess only completed seven passes in 15 attempts, but he averaged nearly 35 yards per completion, throwing for 244 yards.
