Turner Earns No. 250

TAMPA - After three decades of coaching football at the same high school, one would think Billy Turner found the secret to sustaining a top program as well as a passion for the game.

"It's hard to stay in coaching that long," said Turner, who turns 71 in November. "You have to have a supportive wife, for one thing. Your family has to be supportive of you doing it and you have to be a little crazy, I think."

Fortunately for Turner, he possesses all three.

With his team's 42-21 win against Jefferson on Thursday, Turner earned his 200th win at Chamberlain and 250th overall. He began coaching at Chamberlain in 1979.

Following the win, Turner was more concerned with congratulating his players than basking in his own success.

"It meant a lot for me to win tonight and be 7-0," he said. "It ain't about me, it's about this football team."

Senior quarterback Dontae Aycock secured his coach's milestone with two passing touchdowns and three more on the ground. He finished the game with 302 total yards, 154 yards rushing and 148 passing.

"It's been great playing for him," Aycock said. "I've been here since I was a freshman. Him winning his 250th game is a special moment for him and everybody else on the team."

Aycock completed all but one of his passes to senior receiver Anthony Williams, who finished with 129 yards and two touchdowns off five catches. Senior running back Kenny Allen, one of the leading rushers in Hillsborough County, ran for 55 yards off six carries before he was ejected late in the second quarter for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Jefferson was led by sophomore quarterback Quentin Williams, who completed 14 of 27 passes for 234 yards. He was also sacked three times. Senior running back Mark Winters finished with 77 yards rushing and two touchdowns while Terence Doston rushed for 64 yards and caught five passes for 78 yards.

Asked how he would celebrate the milestone, Turner replied "I'm going to drink some lemonade or maybe some hot tea. I got to get rid of this cough."
