ST. PETERSBURG - More than $210,000 was raised today at the annual pet walk organized by The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Tampa Bay.
The one-mile walk, which was sponsored by The St. Petersburg Times, was held at North Shore Park in St. Petersburg, said Marissa Segundo, a spokeswoman for the organization. Some 2,500 people and animals were at the event.
Individuals and teams walking their pets raised money by soliciting donations from their friends and family members, said Segundo, and some of them did so via personalized Web pages.
Companies such as Tech Data and Frontline also helped through corporate sponsorship, Segundo said.
In addition to the walk, the event featured a pet "Howl-o-ween" costume contest, a pet parade, and agility demonstrations.
The money will go toward feeding and taking care of abused and abandoned pets at the SPCA's shelter in Largo, as the animals wait to be adopted, Segundo said. The shelter cares for more than 15,000 such animals each year.
