GO FISHING is a look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Bill Miller.
Grouper fishing off Tarpon Springs is very good, according to Bill Graham. Fishing in 20 feet of water northwest of Anclote Key, Graham, Phil Lokey, and Eric and Zachary Copin caught 175 grouper. Most were just less than the legal size, but enough were keepers to fill their bag limits.
Dick and Greg Guagliardo, fishing 2 miles out of Clearwater, had great kingfishing last week. Slow trolling big white baits and greenbacks produced many kings in the 20-pound class, including one that weighed 35 pounds.
Captain Van Hubbard had a very unusual day fishing Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor. While trolling big white baits along the beach for kings, Hubbard caught a 50-pound tarpon. Later in the day, casting yellow and white Doc's jigs, Hubbard caught a permit and a bonefish to complete a South Florida inshore slam. Bonefish are rare in this area, with Biscayne Bay normally known as their northern range.
Spanish mackerel are tearing up silver spoons and cut white baits at the Fort DeSoto piers and the Skyway piers just after daylight.
