BRADENTON - An unidentified man asked to use a woman's phone Saturday night as she was waiting outside for a ride, but the woman grew suspicious. Apparently her instincts were dead-on.

When she stood up and tightly clutched her purse, the man grabbed her necklace instead and tore it off her neck, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The strong-arm robbery occurred at 845 Cortez Road, Bradenton, at 9:50 p.m., the sheriff's office said.

The woman was sitting down waiting for a ride, after she had finished some shopping, when a small two-door black vehicle started driving through a parking lot toward her, the sheriff's office said.

The vehicle pulled up alongside the building where the woman was waiting and a man got out of it, the sheriff's office said. At the wheel of the black vehicle was a woman, the sheriff's office said.

When the man asked to use her phone, she stood up clutching her purse, the sheriff's office said. After the man tore off her necklace, he ran back to the vehicle and he and the female driver sped off, the sheriff's office said.

The robbery victim was not injured. Sheriff's deputies looked for the suspects in the area but to no avail.

The suspect is described as a white man, 5-feet-7-inches to 5-feet-10-inches tall, and weighing about 140 pounds. He has brown hair, green eyes, short hair and is clean shaven, the sheriff's office said. The woman driving the getaway vehicle is also white, the sheriff's office said.
