Long-time Tribune readers won't be surprised to see we believe that Sen. John McCain is the best candidate for president of the United States.

It's not just the man and the experienced leader we know him to be.

Our judgment is steeped in our traditional values - the lens through which we see the world.

In election years, the Tribune's Editorial Board considers it a public service to tell you what we think about the candidates. In making these endorsements, we consider numerous factors, including relevant knowledge and experience, accomplishments and attitude toward public service.

Today, as we publish our biggest and final endorsement for the Nov. 4 election, we thought it a good time to remind you of the values we stand for, a benchmark by which you might evaluate your own.

•We stand for fiscal conservatism and fiscal restraint at all levels of government.

•We believe in personal responsibility and being accountable for oneself. We do not believe government holds the answers to all social problems.

•We stand for a strong military, understanding that freedom can thrive only if protected by a powerful national defense.

•We believe in self determination - that people, communities and nations have a right to live free from outside tyranny. We stand against nation-building or military interventions absent a risk to our national security.

•We believe in free enterprise, allowing the wisdom of tax incentives, but arguing against subsidies and tariffs.

•We are committed to integrity, innovation and high quality.

•Most of all, we are committed to our community and our country.

Our role in the democratic process is to say what we think. Yours is to think independently and confirm the nation's faith in the wisdom of informed voters.

Early voting starts tomorrow and Election Day is Nov. 4.
