A Light in Financial Gloom: Gas Falls To $3 A Gallon

Gut-wrenching declines in the stock market, a financial panic that some have compared to the Great Depression and the realization that the United States may be headed to its worst recession in more than a generation have trumped what should otherwise be good news: The return of $3-a-gallon gas.

A gallon of regular gasoline fell .049 cents overnight Friday to a new national average of $2.991, according to AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. Prices have not been below $3 nationally since Feb. 16.

Lighthouses Beckon To Highest Bidder

WASHINGTON - A construction worker, a nanny and a clothing designer walk into a lighthouse. It sounds like the beginning of a joke, but the U.S. government couldn't be happier with the punch line.

The lighthouse is surplus federal property and if these visitors like what they see, they'll bid on the dilapidated, rusting structure on Mount Hope Bay in Massachusetts.

The government's annual lighthouse auction, which began three years ago to rid the cash-strapped U.S. Coast Guard of obsolete towers, has turned into a much-anticipated and lucrative event.
Dinosaur Graveyard Unearthed In Utah

LOS ANGELES - Researchers from Los Angeles have found a "dinosaur graveyard" in southeastern Utah that is yielding a wealth of fossilized animals and footprints from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The centerpiece of the new finds is a well-preserved skeleton of a 150-million-year-old sauropod - a long-necked herbivore.
