Nice To Have Mom Around

Lightning center and No. 1 overall draft pick Steven Stamkos is making the transition this season from junior star to NHL regular. Throughout the season, the 18-year-old from Markham, Ontario, will share his experiences with Tribune writer Erik Erlendsson and provide a weekly diary to give Tribune readers an insight to a new way of life along his rookie journey.

We were given a Web site by the real estate agent, went on and found some packages that we liked, went to the store and checked them out. They looked good, and they delivered them the next day. So we got lucky that it went pretty quickly.

I got the furniture delivered, plus I borrowed some furniture from Smitty goaltender Mike Smith so me and Rex Mark Recchi had to take Rex's pickup truck and go back and forth between my place and Smitty's place. Then we got it all set up and everything fits.

I moved in Tuesday night. It takes about a 10-minute drive to get to the rink, so it's not a bad drive. It's far enough away from the downtown area, but at the same time it's close enough to be close to the malls and whatnot, so it's a pretty centralized location.

My mom was down and just left Friday, so it was good that she was helping me out. We went out and bought some house necessities, so it's looking like a normal place. There's no clothes or anything on the floor, I'm a pretty clean guy - my mother has taught me well. I'm sure it will get a little messy now that she's gone, but I'm going to do my best to keep it clean.

It was good to have my mom around. She's obviously a big help, she was helping with a lot of little things. I wouldn't have known to buy some certain things for the house. Foodwise, we went grocery shopping, so it definitely was helpful to have the help from her and get things started off on the right foot.
