NEW PORT RICHEY - The race for state Senate District 11 pits a political novice, Democrat Fred Taylor of New Port Richey, against a legislative veteran, incumbent Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey.
District 11 stretches along the coast from northern Pinellas County to Citrus County.
Fred Taylor, 60, is a Vietnam War veteran and a businessman with a history of switching between the Democratic and Republican parties.
Taylor favors a stronger stand against insurers.
"We haven't had any major disasters, so why haven't our rates gone down?" Taylor asked.
Taylor would like to see a review of property taxes aimed at making them fairer.
Fasano, 50, leads the Transportation and Economic Development Appropriations Committee and is majority whip in the Senate.
Fasano says insurance costs are the biggest issue facing voters. He says the Legislature should force insurers who offer car insurance in Florida to offer property insurance.
"Put their feet to the fire," Fasano said.
Fasano takes pride in the creation of the Tampa Bay Regional Transportation Authority, which was formed last year to solve the region's transportation problems.
