TAMPA - Police have identified a man killed in an early morning collision of a Ford sport utility vehicle and a tractor-trailer hauling eight vehicles.
The SUV was traveling north on North Himes Avenue about 11:30 p.m. when it ran a red light and was struck on the passenger side by the auto hauler traveling west on West Hillsborough Avenue, Tampa police said. The crash killed 27-year-old Dustin Alderman, a passenger in the SUV, investigators said.
Police say four more passengers in the SUV, identified as Michael McClenny, 26, Raymond Altieri, 26, Richard Garwacki, 27, and Kevin Barber, 27, were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.
The driver of the SUV, Justin M. Jones, 26, of 16510 Ashwood Drive, Tampa, is charged with driving under the influence manslaughter, police said. Police reported smelling alcohol on Jones' breath and that his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and his speech was slurred. He also had an "unsteady appearance," according to a criminal report affidavit that states Jones refused to perform a field sobriety test.
The driver of the automobile hauler, Felipe Passos, 28, is in stable condition at Tampa General Hospital, police said.
In the 15-month period ending March 2003, Jones received five guilty dispositions for speeding, according to motor vehicle records. His license was suspended for 30 days in 2003 because of the points he received.
