A car crash near the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport killed a Clearwater man this morning and injured two others, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Leon A. Clement, 57, died at the scene.
Eastbound lanes of State Road 686 at Terminal Parkway were closed for three hours as troopers from the traffic-homicide unit investigated the 7:04 a.m. crash, Sgt. Steve Gaskins said. The lanes have been reopened.
Clement's 1999 Cadillac entered a curve near the airport's entrance, and he drove over the concrete median and crossed the grass median, entering the road's eastbound lanes, troopers say.
The Cadillac sideswiped a 2008 GMC sport utility vehicle driven by 26-year-old Natalie K. Gomez-Evans of Largo. She wasn't injured.
The Cadillac continued west in the eastbound lane, striking a 2005 Kia nearly head-on, according to the highway patrol.
The Kia's driver, 33-year-old Laura F. Inge of Largo, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition. Her 5-year-old passenger, Anthony S. Inge, also was taken to Bayfront in serious condition.
