Both lanes of U.S. 41 north of State Road 52 in Pasco County have been reopened after a fatal head-on collision Tuesday night shut down the highway for more than three hours, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Howard L. Bandoo, 39, of Spring Hill, a passenger in a 2001 Honda, died at the scene of the crash, the highway patrol said. The driver of the Honda, Magali M. Perez, 40, of Spring Hill, was taken by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where she was listed in critical condition Tuesday night.
Bonita Vanstory Mathis, 51, of Brooksville, the driver of the 2004 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle that collided with the Honda, was also taken by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's. Mathis was listed in serious condition.
This is what happened about 7:30 p.m., according to the highway patrol:
Mathis was driving north on U.S. 41 and Perez was heading south. One of the vehicles, which investigators have yet to determine, crossed over the yellow center line dividing the two-lane highway and struck the other vehicle head-on.
Both vehicles then spun away from each other after the impact and came to a stop on opposite sides of the highway.
The crash occurred on an unlit section of U.S. 41, the patrol said.
The investigation is ongoing.
