Berkeley Prep Girls Moving On To State

Published: October 21, 2008

TAMPA Berkeley Prep girls golf coach Tom Shea knows his team can play much better than it did during Tuesday's Class 1A-Region 5 tournament. The good news is, Shea's team will get a chance to do so next week.

While the Bucs' team-total 348 at Westchase Golf Club was far from their best effort, it was good enough to lock up the runner-up spot behind Northside Christian. The second-place finish sends Berkeley Prep to next week's state tournament at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland. It is the Bucs' second consecutive trip to state.

"I think just the fact that obviously qualifying [for state] is pretty impressive," Shea said. "I'd like to see the girls overall go a little lower. But hey, as far as overall, playing and finishing the round, I'm pleased."

Senior Kim Carpenter led the Bucs by shooting a 1-over 73 to finish fourth individually. However, two of the three players ahead of Carpenter were from Northside Christian, which placed three golfers in the top six on its way to a team total of 303.

Northside's A.J. Newell claimed individual medalist honors with a school record-tying 3-under 69, while teammate Michelle Butler also finished under par with a 71 to take third, and Anna Newell shot 76 to finish fifth.

Ridge Community's Erica Popson (70) and Indian Rocks Christian's Ryan Ashburn (73) advanced to state as individuals.

Berkeley Prep's Kyleen Carpenter and Lindsey Weiss also turned in solid rounds of 87 to help the Bucs advance.

Kim Carpenter at one point was 3-under in her round, thanks in part to an eagle at the par-5 13th when she chipped in from 40 yards. She played her front nine even par and the back nine 1 over.
"I'm happy [with the round]," said Carpenter, who was the District 14 individual medalist last week at The Eagles. "I played pretty well today."

Academy of the Holy Names placed fourth in the team standings, getting a team-best 89 from Mariah Diaz. Tampa Prep was fifth behind Taylor Richardson's 86.
