TALLAHASSEE - Florida State is definitely familiar with Virginia Tech starting QB Tyrod Taylor.
But in many ways the Virginia Tech team the Seminoles will face Saturday is different from the one that defeated them for the first time during the Bobby Bowden era a year ago.
Hokies coach Frank Beamer lost 10 starters from that squad and this one is young at the skilled positions on offense. The top two running backs are freshmen as are three of the top four receivers.
Virginia Tech, ranked 110th nationally in total offense, is still experiencing growing pains in some areas. The receivers, for example, had some key drops in Saturday's 28-23 loss to Boston College.
The fleet-footed Taylor, who as a freshman last season accounted for three touchdowns and ran for 92 yards in a 40-21 victory against FSU, is still developing.
"We had some opportunities the other day and for whatever reasons we were very inconsistent in our execution," Beamer said. "Whether it was our receiver not making a catch or a ball that was poorly thrown or protection breaking down - I think all of that went into our problems the other day in a loss to Boston College.
"I would have liked to run the ball better. That's key for us."
ACC HONORS: All Graham Gano did against North Carolina State was score more than half of the Seminoles' 26 points in making all four field-goal attempts and two extra points. For a third consecutive game Gano made a field goal of at least 50 yards.
That earned Gano special teams player of the week honors in the ACC.
