TAMPA - A Tampa man beat and robbed a disabled war veteran, giving him a brain injury, police said.
Tampa police charged Tyron Debaron Williams, 22, today with felony robbery and with violating his probation in another case. Williams, whose first name also is spelled Tyrone in jail records, is being held without bail at Orient Road Jail.
Police said Williams knocked down Dennis Gregory, 53, outside a Citgo station at 9911 N. Nebraska Ave. about 8:10 p.m. Sunday after Gregory had cashed in a lottery ticket.
The blow rendered Gregory unconscious; Williams took Gregory's wallet, which contained $140, police said.
Police identified Williams through surveillance video from the Citgo. No money was recovered.
Gregory suffered a brain injury in the attack and is being treated at home, police spokeswoman Andrea Davis said. She said Gregory is a disabled war veteran but had no other details about his military service.
