TAMPA - Matthew Lee Williams tried setting his 2003 Nissan ablaze Tuesday morning because he couldn't afford the payments, Hillsborough County deputies say.
He ignited a bed sheet that he had fed into the Nissan's gas tank, and the vehicle's gas tank area suffered fire damage, a criminal arrest affidavit states.
The 20-year-old Tampa man initially reported his vehicle had been stolen.
After speaking with deputies, Williams "recanted his story and stated that he tried to 'torch' the vehicle," the affidavit states.
Deputies arrested Williams on Tuesday morning at 9302 Anderson Road. He was charged with attempted arson of a vehicle and filing a false report to law enforcement.
He remained in Orient Road Jail today. His bail was set at $2,500.
