JACKSONVILLE - The Duval County School Board will vote on whether to rename a school named after a former Confederate general and early Ku Klux Klan leader.
The board decided Tuesday to vote on a possible name change for Nathan Bedford Forrest High School at its monthly board meeting on Nov. 3. The meeting will include a public comment period.
After years of criticism, the real push to drop the school's name began nearly two years ago. Last year, an advisory council at the school voted 8-6 to rename it.
Forrest was a 19th century slave trader and planter, who rose through the Confederate army ranks to lieutenant general and later became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.
