DADE CITY - An assistant principal at Pasco High School, who grew up as a migrant worker and picked fruits and vegetables in nine states as a child and young adult, will be honored today as the 2008 Florida Migrant Success Story of the Year.

Georgina Rivera-Singletary is to be recognized at the annual Migrant Education Conference in Naples.

Rivera-Singletary, 43, who works closely with Hispanic families at Pasco High, dropped out of school when she was 14. She became a teenage bride and began raising a family, continuing the migrant lifestyle of her childhood. By the late 1980s, though, she decided to pursue an education after earning a GED.

These days, she is working on a doctorate.

"Even though there were a lot of things working against me, what was inside me was stronger," said Rivera-Singletary.

Pro Soccer Stadium Draws Objections

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - It's not soccer they object to. They don't like the idea of having cars cutting through the neighborhood and having to put up with noise and bright lights late from soccer games and other events at night.

Those are the main complaints that residents voiced Tuesday night at a meeting to discuss a proposed professional soccer stadium that would become home to a team called the Rowdies.

A hearing on the rezoning request is set for 6 p.m. Monday.
