John McCain may be tested ("Uncertain times require McCain's tested vigilance," Our Opinion, Oct. 19), but the results don't give me confidence.
Although McCain may be a courageous man with a distinguished record of service, he tends to see things in single dimensions, in military terms. Victory seems to mean more to him than whether fighting the battle made sense. He is a vigorous 72 now, but how long will that last? I cannot see McCain as president in these times.
Obama's cool-headed intelligence is without question. He's a quick study and understands the nature and scope of our problems. He grasps complex issues and makes decisions readily. He leads and motivates people. His meteoric rise shows he knows the American people and politics as do few men alive. Obama may just have what it takes.
