TAMPA - Six students from East Bay High School wowed the Hillsborough County School Board on Tuesday, raving about their participation in presidential rallies and asking for a district policy change.
The students signed out of school with a majority of their Advanced Placement American government class to attend Tampa rallies for John McCain and Barack Obama.
"It was an inspiration; we got to experience history in the making," Thomas French, 18, told the board. He said he shook McCain's hand and "Obama looked right at me."
The students want government classes to be able to attend political events without losing exam exemption priveleges. District policy does not consider student participation in political functions to be school business, and even excused absences count against exam exemptions.
School Board attorney Tom Gonzalez said he will study the request.
