TAMPA - Teens from Hillsborough County high schools got a lesson in safe driving Tuesday and, hopefully, the motivation to persuade others to put down their cell phones and buckle up.
About 120 teens from Wharton, Sickles, Lennard, Freedom, Brandon and Bloomingdale high schools gathered at the Tampa Convention Center to brainstorm ways to get teens focused on safe driving, make posters and create slogans and songs to take back to their schools.
"If we keep our message short, factual and concise, I think people will pay attention," said Breaunna Mulkey, a sophomore at Lennard High.
Next week is National Teen Driver Safety Week. The Tampa Bay area has the highest fatality rate for teen drivers nationwide, said Mary Beth McDade, spokeswoman for Allstate, which sponsored 14 rallies across the nation.
