Berkeley Prep Girls Moving On To State

Published: October 22, 2008

TAMPA - Berkeley Prep girls golf coach Tom Shea knows his team can play much better than it did during Tuesday's Class 1A-Region 5 tournament. The good news is, Shea's team will get a chance to do so next week.

While the Bucs' team-total 348 at Westchase Golf Club was far from their best effort, it was good enough to lock up the runner-up spot behind Northside Christian. The second-place finish sends Berkeley Prep to next week's state tournament at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland. It is the Bucs' second consecutive trip to state.

"I think just the fact that obviously qualifying for state is pretty impressive," Shea said. "I'd like to see the girls overall go a little lower. But hey, as far as overall, playing and finishing the round, I'm pleased."

Senior Kim Carpenter led the Bucs by shooting a 1-over 73 to finish fourth individually. However, two of the three players ahead of Carpenter were from Northside Christian, which placed three golfers in the top six on its way to a team total of 303.

Northside's A.J. Newell claimed individual medalist honors with a school record-tying 3-under 69.

Berkeley Prep's Kyleen Carpenter and Lindsey Weiss also turned in solid rounds of 87 to help the Bucs advance.
