Callahan, Mitchell Likely To Sit
Armwood and Hillsborough likely will be without one key starter each when the teams play Friday night in a crucial Class 4A-District 11 game at Chelo Huerta Field.
Hawks senior LB Casey Callahan is doubtful for the game with a shoulder injury, while Terriers junior WR/DB Terrence Mitchell is doubtful with lingering effects from a concussion.
Callahan was injured on the first play of the Hawks' victory against Plant City on Thursday, and he missed the rest of the game, Armwood coach Sean Callahan said. Casey Callahan hasn't practiced all week.
Mitchell was injured in Hillsborough's loss to Plant on Thursday. He collided with a teammate and was briefly knocked unconscious.
"He started getting some mild headaches again Tuesday, so he stayed home and sat out practice," Hillsborough coach Earl Garcia said. "He's a big part of our team, but his health comes first. I don't expect him to play Friday."
In other Armwood news, Sean Callahan said he has accepted an invitation to be an assistant coach with the East squad in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, considered the nation's most prestigious high school all-star football game.
COMMITMENTS: On Tuesday, Plant senior outside hitter Danielle Erb announced her commitment to James Madison.
Erb, who leads the nationally ranked and two-time defending state champion Panthers with 239 kills, was a Tribune all-county first-team and 5A second-team all-state selection as a junior.
Also, 2007 Academy of the Holy Names graduate Kristina Cruz has verbally committed to play softball at Virginia Tech. Cruz played at national runner-up Santa Fe Community College this season.
WRESTLING: The Sickles wrestling team is getting some assistance from the pros in an effort to spruce up its facilities.
Florida Championship Wrestling, the only training school for the World Wrestling Entertainment, will put on an event Nov. 8 at the Sickles High gymnasium. Legends of wrestling Dusty Rhodes, Jack Brisco and Steve Keirn are scheduled to appear. Matches are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Proceeds will go to the Sickles wrestling team and the Guardian Wrestling Club. Tickets for the event, which start at $10, can be purchased at the Ballyhoo Grill, 7604 Ehrlich Road in Tampa, or by contacting Sickles wrestling coach Terry Brockland at terry.brockland@sdhc.k12.fl.us.
