NEW PORT RICHEY - Impatient for Halloween? Carve out some time to visit downtown's Pumpkin Fest on Saturday.
The daylong event will include contests featuring pumpkin painting and scarecrow decorating, an old-fashioned horse-drawn hayride; arts and crafts vendors; and a scavenger hunt.
Most of the events will happen at the corner of Main Street and Grand Boulevard. .
Here's a sampling of what's in store:
•Buy a pumpkin at the Pumpkin Patch and paint it between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in Cavalier Square.
Paint supplies will be furnished. Judging will be at 4 p.m. The most creative pumpkin wins a $50 gift certificate to Pasco Camera Exchange.
•Makai Kayak & Kanoe will hold a costume contest at the Pumpkin Patch. The judging will be at 2 p.m.
•A horse-drawn hayride will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rides will go from downtown to the Market on Main and Sims Park.
•Clowns will be painting faces at Cavalier Square from noon until 2 p.m.
•The Progress Energy Art Gallery will host artists and photographers displaying original works.
The gallery also will host a wine tasting inside the gallery.
The Florida Blood Services bloodmobile will be on Grand Boulevard from 4 to 9 p.m.
Downtown merchants will have a sidewalk sale and scavenger hunt for a $2 entrance fee. Register between 10 a.m. and noon at the Pumpkin Patch. A $200 cash prize will be awarded at 3 p.m. Second- and third-place finishers will receive $25.
