ZEPHYRHILLS - Sunrise Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center of Pasco County will host its 12th Annual Domestic Violence Candlelight Vigil from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the west lawn of Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, 7050 Gall Blvd. The vigil will offer an opportunity for survivors of rape and domestic violence to tell their stories through written words, poems, songs and other original compositions.
"The purpose of the vigil is to offer survivors a chance to tell their story, to give them a chance to heal," said Christina Bates, social change community organizer for Sunrise. "It's also going to raise awareness about domestic violence."
The vigil also will feature the clothesline project that includes T-shirts and survivor's stories, communicated through words and artwork. Also offered at the event will be a "Pathway to Peace," featuring luminarias for survivors to walk through at the vigil. An individual can sponsor a luminaria in honor or memory of a loved one for a $5 donation.
"And we will have the bags available at the event," Bates said.
Sunrise representatives will give relevant statistics about rape and domestic violence. And the agency will present awards to people who have contributed to Sunrise's efforts in various ways.
This is a family event open to survivors, their family and friends. Refreshments will be served.
"A candlelight vigil shows support for the victims, and educates the public about the issue that continues to hurt families throughout Pasco County," read a news release.
